ANJ Fines SPS Betting EUR 800,000 for Self-Exclusion Failure
The Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), France’s regulatory body for gambling, has imposed a record fine of EUR 800,000 on SPS Betting, the operator of the Unibet brand in France. This hefty fine was issued due to a serious failure in self-exclusion measures, marking the largest fine in ANJ’s history.

ANJ found that Unibet’s self-exclusion system had a significant malfunction that allowed self-excluded players to continue placing bets over an extended period. While the exact number of self-excluded players who utilized the betting services during the malfunction remains unclear, estimates suggest that it could be around 100 individuals. However, SPS Betting reported that over 4,500 player accounts were impacted, with ANJ estimating the figure to be 6,754.

ANJ deemed the breach of self-exclusion rules by Unibet as a severe violation, emphasizing the importance of respecting such measures in regulated online gambling. Additionally, Unibet had previously been fined twice in France, with the most recent penalty being for exceeding France’s return to player (RTP) limit of 85%. The operator now has two months to appeal the decision and must prominently display information about the fine on its homepage.
