Coljuegos Blocks 10,000 Unlicensed Gambling Sites in Colombia
In a recent announcement, Colombia’s gambling regulator, Coljuegos, revealed that it has taken action against a significant number of unlicensed gambling websites and social media accounts promoting illegal games of chance. The regulatory body has blocked a staggering 10,000 entities involved in the unauthorized promotion and operation of online casinos, digital bingo halls, unregulated sportsbooks, and social media profiles offering various luck-based games.
Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Promoters
Coljuegos stated that it is currently pursuing 35 administrative sanctioning processes against individuals and organizations engaged in illegal gambling activities. This includes influencers and online entities that have been promoting raffles and similar products across social media platforms. As part of its efforts to combat illegal online gambling, Coljuegos collaborated with the Cybernetic Police Center and Meta company to block 289 social media profiles on Facebook and Instagram.
The regulator emphasized that operating games of chance without proper authorization is a crime in Colombia, punishable by fines of up to 100 times the legal monthly minimal wage. Only licensed operators are permitted to offer online gaming services in the country, with 16 authorized online operators currently operating under the regulations set by Coljuegos.
President’s Directive to Combat Fraud
Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos, highlighted the regulator’s success in cracking down on illegal gambling activities. He mentioned that the recent ban wave was the largest in Coljuegos’ history, reflecting the commitment to President Gustavo Petro’s directive to eradicate fraud and protect Colombian citizens’ well-being and finances.
Colombia’s enforcement of VAT on iGaming also made headlines recently, with the government implementing a Value Added Tax (VAT) on online gambling services. The measure aims to generate funds to address the humanitarian crisis in Catatumbo, where violence has displaced over 39,000 individuals from their homes.
Impact of VAT Implementation
The introduction of VAT on online gambling marks a policy shift from a previous exemption granted to online betting companies in 2016. The government anticipates that this tax could yield up to $500 million annually, though concerns remain about its long-term economic consequences.
